Sustainable R&D Centre DSM

Why should you start working with BIM? Hayo Meijs’ (head of engineering at Croon TBI), answer is brief and concise. BIM is a powerful tool to optimize your business operations. Both internally: from design and build to finance and maintenance. And externally: collaboration and aligning with third parties. BIM provides insight and streamlining to your processes.

Hayo Meijsis convinced of the contribution BIM can provide. This contribution increases as more departments become involved: “The biggest challenge is to get internal support and to convince everyone of the value of BIM. That it goes beyond 3D visualization and reduction of failure costs.”

Frank Wolbertus, Revit modeler and BIM expert at HVL: “We’ve made fantastic 3D installation drawings for years with Stabicad for AutoCAD. And it’s also always been sufficient for the coordination of the piping, ventilation and cable ducts. Now that we work simultaneously on the project model with various parties, such as architects, engineers and consultants, we started with Stabicad for Revit at the end of 2012. And it’s now enjoyed not just by a few enthusiastic BIM-experts.”

Frank: “Meanwhile, we are also working daily with BIM projects. We discuss the progress biweekly with the BIM experts involved. We look at what we can do to BIM per project. At the moment, it seems that the traditional procurement projects are mainly little BIM and we then only work with Revit if it provides added value.”

Hayo: “We see Big BIM winning ground with the large Design-Construct projects. We now have three BIM projects running simultaneously. The sustainable construction of a bank office in Sittard must be done with a high BREEAM score. The necessary simulations are done in the Revit model and we set up design alternatives side by side.” The ultramodern R&D center of DSM in Geleen also has a strong sustainability ambition and HVL put itself on the map as the knowledge company that takes on the most complex installation issues.
